The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) will conduct special anti-adulteration drives across the country during the holy month of Ramadan likely to begin from 1 or 2 March based on moon sighting.
The autonomous government body will ensure the standard and quality of food, including iftar items, fruits, children's food, and cosmetic products, by conducting proper tests during its drives.
Starting from the first day of the fasting, the drive will be continued throughout the holy month, said Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman while addressing a press conference at his ministry office in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Though the holy month is likely to begin on 1 or 2 March, the BSTI ramped up its surveillance across the country a month ago to prevent food adulteration, price and weight irregularities, and market manipulation.
The BSTI will conduct a total of three mobile courts involving its executive magistrates in and around the capital Dhaka with the help of law enforcement agencies, including the police.
It will also conduct the same drives across the country to make its mission successful, said the industry adviser.
Additionally, during the inspections, special attention will be given to commonly consumed food and beverages by those who will be fasting, including fruit drinks, syrup, puffed rice, dates, soft drink powders, carbonated beverages, edible oil, mustard oil, ghee, pasteurised milk, noodles, instant noodles, lachcha semai and water, as these items are widely used for iftar.
