A clash erupted between two agitating groups of the Awami League (AL) over territorial dominance and land dispute, leaving two dead.
During the confrontation, two people were shot and killed by gunfire from the opposing side, while at least 30 others were injured.
The incident took place Sunday morning, starting around 8 AM, in the remote char area of Banshgari union of Raipura upazila in Narsingdi.
The deceased were identified as Alamgir Hossain Alam (32) and Ali Ahmed (24) of the char. Both are believe to be the supporter of AL-backed former Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Ashraful Islam.
According to Police and locals, “In the remote char area of Banshgari union a long-standing rivalry over territorial dominance has been ongoing between former UP Chairman Ashraful Islam and running UP Chairman Zakir Hossain. This rivalry has led to multiple clashes and violent altercations between the two groups.”
“Several individuals have been killed and injured in these confrontations, resulting in numerous lawsuits and counter-lawsuits filed against each other.”
As a continuation of these tensions, on Sunday around 7:30 AM, both sides clashed after rallying for a “call to war”. Armed with spears, lances, machetes, knives, and locally made firearms, the groups engaged in violent confrontation.
In the exchange of gunfire, two were shot dead and some 30 people from both sides were injured. Injured were taken to different clinics.
Police rushed to the spot upon receiving the information. Raipura Police Station’s Officer-In-Charge Adil Mahmud confirmed the death and said that Police are working to take the situation under control.
