The Highway Police has introduced a WhatsApp ‘Highway Police Special’ to receive videos on criminal offences like bribery, extortion, mugging and robbery by unscrupulous people including police, reckless driving and other criminal offences on highways nationwide.
Anyone can send videos of such crimes to the WhatsApp number 01320-182200 seeking police help, Md. Delwar Hossain Mian, additional inspector general and chief of the Highway Police unit, told the media.
While talking to the reporter at his office in Dhaka on Tuesday, he said that the video messages can be sent to the WhatsApp number from any place across the country round the clock.
“Some police officers are keeping in touch with the helpline number while I am monitoring it to make the efforts successful,” said Delwar.
The senior officer said they unofficially launched the service on Monday and have already started receiving videos relating to the criminal offences.
“We will take proper actions based on the video footage,” he said, adding that the videos will help the Highway Police curb crimes on the roads and highways across the country.
On 18 October 2022, the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry issued a circular reading the compulsory retirement of 12th BCS batch officer Delwar Hossain when he was a special superintendent (SS) at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police.
After the changeover of the Sheikh Hasina regime amid a mass upsurge led by students, the government reinstated him at his job on 27 August 2024.
On 16 October last year, he was posted to the Highway Police as its chief.
