BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the Awami League has failed in its attempt to erase Ziaur Rahman's name, and on the contrary, the people have erased the name of their leader and party.
“Ziaur Rahman's name is in the hearts of the people of Bangladesh, it cannot be erased,” he said.
He made these comments at a discussion meeting organized at the Engineering Institution Auditorium in the capital on Sunday to mark the birth anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
At the same time, the BNP secretary general also alleged that the elections are being not taken seriously in the name of reforms.
He said BNP gave 31 points about reforms two years ago. Therefore, if the lame argument that reforms should come first, then elections will not work. Without elected power, reforms do not gain legitimacy, do not gain strength.
Stating that a political government is essential to improve the economic condition of the country, he further said, “The economic condition of the country is not good. Corruption has started again; the bureaucrats in the administration have started their previous business again. Pay attention to that. The sooner the elections are held, the more possible it will be to deal with the economic and political crisis.”
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman participated virtually from London in the discussion. In addition, BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed, among others, spoke on the occasion.
