Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the Awami League government of laundering $280 billion during its 15 years in power.
Speaking at a programme in Dinajpur on Friday, Fakhrul slammed the Awami league, claiming that under their leadership, the current generation has been deprived of their right to vote for three consecutive terms. “What kind of democracy is this? What kind of politics is it when people are denied their right to vote even once in five years?” he said.
Reflecting on Bangladesh's political trajectory, Fakhrul expressed regret over the country’s failure to achieve peace and prosperity. “In 52-53 years, we have not been able to build a Bangladesh that is happy, peaceful, and united. Our politics is plagued by narrow-mindedness, and we have reached the lowest point in terms of morality,” he added.
He said, “We have started dreaming again. That dream is, in the true sense, the dream that President Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of our independence, dreamed of a happy, beautiful, prosperous, and loving democratic Bangladesh. We have tried to build that Bangladesh.”
