The Jatiya Nagorik Committee (National Citizens' Committee — NCC) has called on Bangladesh's interim government to urgently establish a comprehensive framework at the local government level to alleviate the public's suffering. In a statement released on Friday, NCC convener Nasir Uddin Patwary emphasized the need for cooperation from removed councilors of city corporations and municipalities across the country to help form a new political party aimed at tackling the nation’s pressing challenges.
Patwary clarified that the committee does not support Awami League-affiliated candidates, but instead advocates for independent candidates who played a significant role in the July uprising. These individuals, backed by anti-fascist political parties, are seen as true representatives of the people, in contrast to those aligned with the previous regime.
In response to widespread confusion and criticism on social media regarding Patwary’s comments at a council assembly on Wednesday, NCC spokesperson Samantha Sharmin issued a statement. The assembly, organized by the Bangladesh City and Municipal Council at the National Press Club Auditorium, had called for the reinstatement of city and municipal councilors in the public’s interest and for cooperation with the current government. However, some media outlets misinterpreted Patwary’s speech, erroneously linking it to a call for the return of Awami League-appointed councilors.
The NCC strongly reiterated its opposition to the reinstatement of any Awami League-affiliated counselors, labeling them "fascist" and accusing the party of having undermined the electoral system during its rule. Patwary also criticized the previous government's electoral practices, including "one-sided elections" and "dummy elections," which he argued had severely damaged the democratic process at both national and local levels.
Despite these challenges, the NCC highlighted the success of independent candidates supported by anti-fascist political parties in local elections, underscoring their dedication to public service. Patwary also called for the formation of a 'Local Government Commission' to properly assess the situation and ensure fair representation.
Patwary’s remarks at the press club sparked significant debate, with BNP and Chhatra Dal leaders accusing the NCC of attempting to rehabilitate the Awami League. This controversy has become a hot topic in social media discussions.
