Germany's opposition leader and frontrunner for chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has called for closer cooperation with Turkiye, highlighting its strategic importance amid major geopolitical shifts. Speaking ahead of Germany’s early elections on Feb. 23, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader emphasized Türkiye’s crucial role in security and migration management, reads a daily Sabah report.
"Türkiye sits at a key crossroads between the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. With one of NATO’s largest armies, it remains essential to our defense strategy," Merz told Anadolu Agency (AA). He stressed the need for a more strategic dialogue with Türkiye, especially as a potential second Trump presidency could see the U.S. shifting its foreign policy priorities.
"As the U.S. expects NATO allies to take on more responsibility, European nations must work with Türkiye to pursue shared foreign policy interests, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East," he added.
The CDU, in alliance with the Christian Social Union (CSU), currently leads in the polls, with Merz positioned to form a coalition government. Recent surveys show the Christian Democrats securing 30% of the vote, while the Social Democrats (SPD) trail at 15%.
If elected, Merz vowed to strengthen EU-Türkiye ties to address migration challenges and contribute to Syria’s stability. Türkiye hosts approximately three million Syrian refugees, the largest number globally, while Germany is home to about 975,000. "Türkiye has provided exceptional support for Syrian refugees as part of the EU-Türkiye agreement. A stable and free Syria is essential for the safe return of displaced Syrians in Türkiye and Europe," he said, expressing hope for an inclusive political resolution in Syria.
Merz also underscored the deep political and economic ties between Germany and Türkiye, pointing to the three million Turks living in Germany as a vital bridge between the two nations. "Millions of people from Türkiye have found a home in Germany and helped build this country. Meanwhile, millions of Germans enjoy visiting Türkiye each year," he noted.
Trade and investment between the two countries have flourished in recent decades, laying a solid foundation for further cooperation. With over a million German citizens of Turkish descent eligible to vote in the upcoming election, Merz argued that CDU/CSU policies offer the best path forward. "Turkish-origin citizens want what all Germans want: a strong state, fair opportunities, a robust economy, and quality education. The CDU is committed to these goals," he said.
Meanwhile, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to visit Türkiye on Wednesday as part of a three-day Middle East tour. Following meetings with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Steinmeier will meet President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to discuss Syria, regional stability, and the Gaza conflict.
Türkiye’s growing influence in Syria, particularly following the decline of Bashar Assad’s regime, is expected to be a key discussion point. Talks will also cover Iran’s role in the region and the potential impact of the Trump administration’s policies on the Middle East.
According to his office, Steinmeier will articulate Germany’s strategic interests in light of shifting regional dynamics.
