Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on Tuesday that two Chinese nationals were captured fighting for Russian forces in the Donetsk region, escalating tensions over China's role in the conflict. The two individuals, detained by Ukrainian forces, were found to have documents, bank cards, and personal data identifying them as Chinese nationals, reads a DW report.
Zelenskyy’s announcement raises significant concerns, as China has repeatedly claimed to maintain neutrality in Russia’s war against Ukraine, offering non lethal assistance to either side. Despite this, Zelenskyy expressed doubt over China’s stance, stating that evidence suggests more Chinese citizens are fighting for Russia.
In his social media post, Zelenskyy called for a direct explanation from China. "Russia's involvement of China, whether direct or indirect, in this war is a clear signal that Putin intends to continue this conflict," he wrote. The Ukrainian president also instructed his foreign ministry to reach out to Beijing immediately.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha summoned China’s charge d'affaires to demand an explanation, calling the involvement of Chinese nationals in Russia’s invasion a threat to China’s credibility as a UN Security Council member.
The U.S. State Department expressed concern, noting the situation was “disturbing” but did not comment further on China’s alleged involvement. While China has strengthened ties with Russia, it has not publicly been involved in providing direct military support.
Military analyst Anders Puck Nielsen noted that the presence of foreign nationals on both sides of the war is not surprising. However, the situation would become much more serious if official Chinese military units were involved, as seen with North Korea, which has sent thousands of soldiers to fight alongside Russia.
This latest development adds another layer of complexity to an already highly charged international conflict. The involvement of foreign nationals, whether on the side of Ukraine or Russia, is a growing concern for global stability and geopolitical relations.
