Cultural Affairs Advisor Mostafa Sarwar Farooki said work is underway to convert all public library books into e-books.
He made this announcement at a press conference at the National Museum on Tuesday on the occasion of Library Day.
Mostafa Sarwar Farooki said, "The work on e-books is underway. But I think this program should be done in a more organized manner. We should set a target that whether we can convert all public library books into e-books within the next two to three years or not. The danger of working without a target is that you will continue to work throughout your life. But the work will never be organized.”
He said, "The sooner this e-book program can be successfully taken to a satisfactory level, the sooner Bangladesh will be able to collaborate with the big libraries of the world."
However, along with the need for e-book conversion, he also highlighted the importance of libraries.
The Cultural Affairs Advisor said, "The impact of physical libraries is different. Many people go to one place and study. This is sheer community feeling-experience; this community experience is very important for people. Therefore, physical libraries have to be made usable.”
He said that the government has already extended the reading hours in 10 public libraries to 7 pm and is also thinking of installing air conditioning systems in the libraries.
