The Election Commission (EC) has collected data on more than 47 lakh citizens during its door-to-door voter list update campaign. Among them, nearly one million have been identified as deceased voters, as of February 2.
ASM Humayun Kabir, director general of the National Identity Registration Wing at the EC, stated, “As of Sunday (February 2), we have collected information on 10 lakh 39 thousand 220 deceased voters. Additionally, we have gathered data on 37 lakh 45 thousand 784 new eligible voters. However, Monday’s data is yet to be included, so these numbers may change.”
The voter list update process began on January 20, with Election Commission officials visiting households to collect data. Monday (February 3) was the final day for data collection.
From February 5, the process of capturing photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans will commence and continue until April 11.
In a cautionary notice, the EC has warned that registering as a voter multiple times is a punishable offence. It also emphasised that duplicate registrations can be easily detected through fingerprint verification.
According to the very last update, the total number of voters in the country stands at 12 crore 18 lakh 50 thousand 160.
