Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources, emphasized that social forestry initiatives should not be introduced in natural forests. She noted that trees planted in social forestry are later harvested, and profits are distributed among beneficiaries.
However, she reminded that the primary duty of the Forest Department is to protect natural forests, not to distribute funds.
The Advisor further stressed the importance of planting indigenous tree species rather than eucalyptus and acacia in forestation projects. She also highlighted the need to secure farmers’ rights within forestry initiatives, urging that conflicts between the Forest Department and farmers be resolved.
A harmonious coexistence between forests, forest dwellers, and wildlife is essential, she added.
Syeda Rizwana made these remarks as the chief guest at the International Environment Conference 2024 organized by 'Sabuj Prithini’ in Tangail on Wednesday.
In her address, the Advisor called for measures to protect the agricultural sector from climate change.
She argued against following consumer-driven economic models, highlighted the need to curb energy wastage, such as daytime lighting, and called on citizens to reduce the nation’s environmental burden by refraining from using polythene and taking a firm stance against pollution.
“Active participation and collective efforts are essential to safeguard Bangladesh’s environment,” she remarked.
She further stressed the importance of public awareness and responsible actions to mitigate the impacts of climate change, underscoring that governmental initiatives alone are insufficient. Individual and collective efforts are crucial, she said, calling on the younger generation to lead in promoting eco-friendly technologies.
Among the special guests were Tangail District Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Professor Dr. Shahidul Haque of Bangladesh Agricultural University, ASPADA Environmental Development Foundation Executive Director Lion M. A. Rashid, Secretary General of Riverine People Sheikh Rokon, and Green Earth’s General Secretary Shahid Mahmud.
The event was presided over by Bureau Bangladesh’s Director of Operations, Financial Services, HRD, and ICT, Farmina Hossain.
Environmental activists from various countries, including India, Nepal, and Malaysia, attended this international environment conference.
The Advisor presented awards to the environmental activists at the event.
