The students and job seekers, who have been waging a movement seeking reform in the quota system in government jobs, observing a “complete shutdown” across the country on Thursday.
They asked to close everything except the hospitals and other emergency services, Daily Sun reports.
During the nationwide complete shutdown programme, several districts including capital city have witnessed students-police clash.
In Bogura: At 11:30 am, when the students tried to come to Satmatha with a procession, there was a series of chases with the police. Meanwhile, Satmatha area turned into a battleground due to extensive vandalism, throwing of bricks and cocktail explosions. More than 50 people including journalists and police were injured. The injured have been taken to different hospitals.
On Dhaka-Chittagong Highway: Students of various colleges blocked the highway at Shimrail intersection on Dhaka-Chittagong highway. During this time, the students gave slogans in favor of student movement. The agitators beat two BCL leaders and set fire to their motorcycle. Meanwhile, many people were seen going to their destinations on foot due to the closure of all traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
In Chittagong: In the morning, the protesting students took position in the Shah Amanat Bridge area of Chittagong. There the police fired tear shells. Later students locked in a clash with the police.
