Spare aluminium foil after packing a meal can be a crucial weapon if you’re tired of frizzy hair. Sounds unprecedented, but aluminium foil might be the trick for taming frizzy hair in jiffies.
But how does it really work?
Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant Dermatologist at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, explains that aluminium foil can help reduce frizz, especially static-induced frizz. “The method involves running a piece of aluminum foil over the hair, which helps to smoothen the strands and reduce flyaways,” says Dr Kohli, reports The Indian Express.
This method is effective because it targets static electricity in the hair, a common cause of frizz. “Static in hair typically results from friction from brushing, wearing hats, or even environmental factors like low humidity. Aluminium, as a metal and a good conductor, helps counterpoise this static charge,” Dr Kohli adds.
Are there any risks?
While using aluminium foil to reduce frizz is generally safe, there are some considerations:
- Hair Damage: Undue use of aluminium foil, particularly with heat, can potentially destroy the hair cuticle.
- Scalp Sensitivity: People with sensitive scalps or allergic to metal must avoid this trick to prevent irritation.
- Environmental Impact: Recurrent use of disposable aluminium foil can contribute to environmental waste.
Dr Kohli advises, “It’s a quick fix for static-induced frizz but should be used cautiously. Incorporating professional hair care practices and products provides a more sustainable approach to managing frizz. Addressing the underlying causes of frizz holistically will yield the best results.”
Are there other simple ways to manage frizzy hair?
Here are some easy methods to combat frizz:
- Smoothing Treatment: Applying a smoothing serum or leave-in conditioner to damp hair can lock in moisture and control frizz.
- Cold Shot on Hair Dryer: Cold shot button instead of heating on your hair dryer can help lessen frizz.
- Silk Pillowcase: Switch to a silk pillowcase can reduce friction and retain moisture while one sleeps.
- Less Brushing: Occasional brushing with a wide-tooth comb can reduce friction-induced static.
- Hydrating Hair Masks: Regularly apply hydrating hair masks to nourish and strengthen hair, making it less prone to frizz.
With these tips and a little aluminium foil in hand, one can keep frizz at bay and enjoy smoother, more manageable hair.
