Facing growing domestic and international criticism, US lawmakers announced plans to vote next week on a resolution aiming to halt US President Donald Trump’s war on Iran and force Congressional authorization for further attacks, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said, Al Mayadeen reported.
"Congress must reassert its authority, especially at this dangerous moment", Schumer stated, following Trump’s announcement of a temporary two-week ceasefire. The ceasefire came hours before Trump’s self-imposed deadline demanding Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face catastrophic strikes on civilian infrastructure.
In a striking demonstration of Washington’s disregard for international law, the Senate previously rejected a resolution that would have required Trump to secure Congressional approval before escalating the war on Iran.
This failure reflects the US political system’s complicity in Trump’s unilateral aggression and the broader militaristic agenda in West Asia.
Trump previously warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” sparking global alarm. Many Democrats called for his removal, noting that indiscriminate attacks on civilian sites violate the 1949 Geneva Conventions.
Schumer denounced the war as “unhinged,” emphasizing that Trump’s operations have failed to weaken Iran’s government or halt its nuclear program, while simultaneously driving global energy prices to record highs, illustrating the far-reaching consequences of Washington’s militarism.
