United States Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated that the total death toll from the massive earthquake in Myanmar could exceed 1,000.
The US-based organization provided this information in a statement on its official website.
According to the website, Given the magnitude of the earthquake, it can be assumed that extensive damage has occurred across large parts of Myanmar, and more than 1,000 people have died.
The 7.7-magnitude tremor hit northwest of the city of Sagaing on Friday afternoon at a shallow depth, the United States Geological Survey said. A 6.4-magnitude aftershock hit the same area minutes later.
There is still little information available regarding the latest situation in Myanmar following the earthquake. According to MRTV(the state-run television network in Myanmar), at least 144 people were killed.
However, in Thailand, reports of damage have been circulating in international media, indicating that the quake was highly destructive.
A state of emergency has been declared across the six worst-affected regions in Myanmar
Thailand's Prime Minister has also declared a state of emergency in the capital, Bangkok.
