The US government has rejected a clemency petition for the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist imprisoned in the United States, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) was told on Friday, reports DAWN.
This disclosure came during the hearing of a petition filed by Dr. Siddiqui’s sister, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, before Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan.
Imran Shafiq, Dr. Fowzia’s lawyer, informed reporters outside the court that the US had declined to approve the clemency request and had also refused to sign a prisoner swap agreement with Pakistan—another potential pathway for her repatriation.
With both these avenues blocked, Mr. Shafiq revealed that Pakistan is now seeking justice through the US legal system by filing a petition comprising thousands of pages. He expressed hope that this effort might lead to relief from US courts.
