Juliette Touma, the communication director for the UN’s refugee agency for the Palestinians, UNRWA, says the volume of aid going into Gaza has increased “very significantly” after the ceasefire deal entered into force despite “huge challenges” on the ground, reports Al Jazeera.
She added that the challenges in question are related to the rubble, which is “everywhere” in the enclave, as well as “unexploded ordnance” that is putting the lives of people in danger.
Touma stressed that the focus of the UNRWA currently is to bring as much humanitarian aid as possible to people in Gaza.
“They lost everything and they need everything,” she said.
“The key is for the ceasefire to hold. That will allow for the UN and others to do damage assessment, so that we understand what is needed and then there comes the reconstruction and recovery,” Touma added.
