An airstrike by Myanmar's military government killed dozens in Kyauk Ni Maw village, Rakhine state, this week, according to the United Nations and local reports. The attack on Wednesday destroyed around 500 homes and killed over 40 people, including 26 Muslim villagers whose names were released by the Arakan Army, an ethnic militia fighting for regional autonomy, reports Reuters.
The shadow National Unity Government and the Arakan Army confirmed the strike, while the UN urged all parties to uphold international humanitarian law. Reuters could not independently verify the reports, and the military junta has not commented. It denies targeting civilians, labeling its actions as a fight against "terrorists."
Myanmar remains in crisis nearly four years into a civil war ignited by the 2021 military coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Activists from the Blood Money Campaign are calling for international sanctions on entities supplying aviation fuel to Myanmar’s military, arguing such measures are essential to ending airstrikes.
“Only when this support stops will the airstrikes truly come to an end,” said Mulan, a campaign spokesperson.
