Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi writes in an op-ed for the Lebanese-based Al-Akhbar newspaper that Syria is now faced with a “difficult test” after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, reports Al Jazeera.
“The threats emanating from movements of terrorist factions like Al-Qaeda and Daesh [ISIL or ISIS] has exacerbated the concerns of the region, and fears that terrorists will transform Syria into a safe haven for themselves,” the top Iranian diplomat wrote.
According to Araghchi, Israeli “violations and military interventions” in Syria, which he said are backed by the US and allies from outside the region, have also created challenges.
“The clear goal of these violations and interventions are to destroy the social fundamentals, scientific resources, economic infrastructure, and defence power of Syria,” he said.
Araghchi said the only way out is to “raise the flag of independence” in Syria and respect its people.
