Global leaders have extended early congratulations to Donald Trump on what many are calling a “historic comeback” to the White House. Despite the official results not yet being declared, the election has drawn considerable international response, reports UNB.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán were among the first to issue congratulatory statements, followed by leaders from France, the UK, India and many more international organizations.
Bangladesh’s interim government, under the leadership of Prof Muhammad Yunus, has extended its congratulations to Donald Trump on his election as the 47th President of the United States, expressing optimism for strengthened bilateral ties and future cooperation.
"We welcome this (his win). We hope Bangladesh-US relations will be deepened and relations will reach a new height," Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters at a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday evening.
Writing on X, Zelenskyy expressed a warm message to Trump, recalling their recent discussions. "I had a great meeting with President Trump back in September, when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine," he shared.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu also posted a celebratory message on X, noting his excitement about Trump’s projected victory: "Dear Donald and Melania Trump, Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback! Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory!”
Hungary's Viktor Orbán, known for his right-wing stance, called it "the biggest comeback in US political history!" Orbán added, "Congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump on his enormous win. A much-needed victory for the World!"
French President Emmanuel Macron extended his message of congratulations in both French and English, underscoring a willingness to work together again: "Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump,” he posted on X. "Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz congratulated Trump, adding Germany and the US "have been working together successfully for a long time to promote prosperity".
In the UK, newly elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose Labour government recently took office, offered his best wishes to Trump, posting, "Congratulations President-elect @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory. I look forward to working with you in the years ahead."
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised Trump and Spain would work on a "strong transatlantic partnership".
Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called her country and the US "sister nations" and wished Trump the "most sincere congratulations".
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Portuguese counterpart also wished Trump congratulations on his projected victory.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also joined in, congratulating Trump on his return to the presidency. “Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory," Modi wrote on X, adding, "As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let's work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity."
China said Wednesday it hoped for "peaceful coexistence" with the United States as Donald Trump neared a decisive victory over Kamala Harris in the country's presidential election. "We will continue to approach and handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular briefing.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “Let’s not forget that we are talking about the unfriendly country that is both directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state.” No congratulations were forthcoming from Moscow, where President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Peskov, declared that Russia-U.S. relations were at the “lowest point in history.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese posted on X “Congratulations to President Donald Trump on his election victory”. “Australians and Americans are great friends and true allies.”
In a statement in Turkish on X, Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan lauded his “friend” Trump, “who won the presidential election in the United States after a great struggle and was re-elected as the President of the United States.”
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics congratulated Trump and said, “Europe needs a strong United States and the United States needs a strong Europe.”
Gitanas Nauseda, Lithuania’s head of state, said that “transatlantic unity is crucial.” Nauseda pointed out that “the U.S. is a key strategic ally” of Lithuania and both countries were taking security matters seriously.
Alar Karis, Estonia’s president, noted that the small Baltic nation of 1.3 million “values its enduring alliance with the United States, founded on shared democratic ideals and joint commitment to global security.”
Netherlands Prime Minister Dick Schoof posted on X. “Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on winning the presidential election”. “The United States is an important ally for the Netherlands, both bilaterally and in international contexts such as NATO. I look forward to our close cooperation on the shared interests between the USA and the Netherlands.”
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev joined world leaders to congratulate Trump on his victory in the race for a second term as U.S. President. “I am confident that our effective dialogue at the highest level will continue in the interests of the strategic partnership between the United States and Bulgaria,” Radev wrote in a post on the social platform X.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk also congratulated Trump on X, adding “I look forward to our cooperation for the good of the American and Polish nations.”
Saudi Arabia's King Salman and his son, de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, congratulated Donald Trump on his election victory on Wednesday, state media reported.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba congratulated Trump on Wednesday for his victory in the presidential election and said he hopes to get in touch with him as soon as possible to discuss ways to further strengthen Japan-U.S. ties. “I hope to closely cooperate with President-elect Trump to further elevate Japan-U.S. alliance and relations to even higher levels,” Ishiba told reporters at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim posted on X: “Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on his remarkable political comeback and victory in the US presidential election. This new chapter brings renewed opportunities, and we’re ready to move forward with optimism, collaboration and shared purpose.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said he looked forward to working with Trump. “Under your strong leadership, the future of the ROK-U.S. alliance and America will shine brighter,” Yoon wrote on the social platform X, using the initials of South Korea’s formal name, the Republic of Korea. In response to growing threats posed by nuclear-armed North Korea, Yoon’s government has worked closely with the Biden administration to strengthen the countries’ combined military exercises and solidify three-way military cooperation with Japan.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II congratulated Trump, saying in a post on X that he was “looking forward” to working with Trump “in service of regional and global peace and stability for all.” Jordan has been a key mediator for the U.S. over the past year as officials have sought to reach a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas.
Philippines President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. posted on X: “President Trump has won, and the American people have triumphed. I congratulate them on their victory in an exercise that showed the world the strength of American values.”
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who has been sanctioned by the U.S. over alleged links to diamond smuggling and for political repression, congratulated Trump on the social platform X, writing: “Congratulations to President elect @realdonaldtrump on your election victory. The world needs more leaders who speak for the people. Zimbabwe stands ready to work with you and the American people to build a better, more prosperous and more peaceful world.”
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wrote on X, “Congratulations to President Donald Trump on your election victory and comeback. I look forward to working together to further strengthen the relationship between our two countries during your term.”
Somalia’s Hassan Sheikh wrote on X, “I congratulate you President-elect of the United States of America H.E @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory. I look forward to continuing our two nations’ strong collaboration and partnership to advance peace, security, and common prosperity for our two nations.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen "warmly" congratulated Trump in a post on the same social network, adding that the US and the EU were "more than just allies" and committing to work with the potential president.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino wrote on his Instagram account in a message of congratulations to Trump. “We will have a great FIFA World Cup and a great FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America! Football Unites the World.”
NATO chief Mark Rutte on Wednesday congratulated Donald Trump for winning the US presidential election and said his return to power will help keep the alliance "strong". "His leadership will again be key to keeping our Alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through NATO," Rutte said in a statement.
