Central bank governor Ahsan H Mansur said that Bangladeshis spend over $5 billion each year on medical treatment abroad.
The governor shared the information while speaking at a workshop titled “Cross-Border Data Flow: A Bangladesh Perspective,” jointly organized by the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh and the World Bank.
The event was held at Amari Dhaka in the capital’s Gulshan 2 on Sunday.
He said: “India and Thailand became the top destination for medical tourists due to their advanced healthcare systems.”
In his address, Mansur noted that a significant portion of this expenditure occurs unofficially, intensifying pressure on the country’s balance of payments.
To mitigate this, he emphasized the need for a legal framework for data processing to facilitate efficient sharing of data both locally and internationally.
