The government has decided to provide loans to readymade garment (RMG) factory owners to help them pay their workers’ salaries, aiming to restore normalcy in the sector.
Labour Adviser Asif Mahmud made the announcement while addressing a press conference after a meeting with the RMG factory owners at his ministry office in Dhaka on Wednesday.
He came up with the announcement when the RMG owners announced closures of their more than 100 factories in Ashulia on Wednesday, following sporadic unrest over several demands including due salaries.
A decision has been made to immediately pay the workers’ outstanding salaries, and the factories affected by the workers' movement will be provided loans by the Bangladesh Bank, said the adviser.
