Five members of a family, including three children, suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out at their residence in the Kadamtali area of the capital early Sunday.
The injured were identified as vegetable vendor Kalam, 47, his wife Salma, 35, son Munna, 12, and two daughters Munni, 10, and Kotha, 5. All of them are currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The family lived on the ground floor of a nine-storey building in the Giridhara area near Saddam Market under Kadamtali Police Station. Their home district is Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali.
Quoting injured Salma Begum, rescuer Rakib said the family members had been asleep when the incident occurred. The fire spread suddenly with a loud explosion after Kalam woke up early to light the stove for cooking. The family somehow managed to escape from the room.
National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Residential Surgeon Dr Shaon Bin Rahman said all five victims are receiving treatment at the emergency department.
