Bangladesh has ranked among the world's top five fisheries countries in 2024. At the same time, it has also retained its position as the world's second largest producer of inland open water fisheries.
This information was revealed in a recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The report titled 'The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2026' says that in 2024, the total production in the global fisheries and aquaculture sector reached a record 235 million tons. Of this, the production of aquatic animals was 195 million tons and the production of algae was 40 million tons. The total production increased by 5.2 percent compared to 2022. The primary sales value of this production is estimated at about 565 billion US dollars.
According to the report, 67 percent of the total production came from marine waters. Of this, 51 percent came from open water fisheries and 49 percent from aquaculture. The remaining 33 percent of production comes from inland waters, of which 84 percent comes from fisheries.
Asia continues are leading in the world in fisheries and aquaculture production. 76 percent of global production comes from this region. This is followed by Latin America and the Caribbean with 8 percent, Europe with 7 percent, Africa with 6 percent, North America with 2 percent, and Oceania with 1 percent.
In 2024, aquatic animal production is expected to reach an all-time high of 195 million tonnes. Of this, 53 percent comes from aquaculture and 47 percent from open-water fisheries. The initial sales value of this production is estimated at around US$545 billion. Of the total aquatic animal production, 61 percent or 118 million tonnes comes from marine areas. The remaining 39 percent or 77 million tonnes comes from inland waters.
