The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has begun deducting demerit points from driving licences as part of stricter enforcement of the Road Transport Act, 2018.
In an urgent notification, the authority urged all drivers to strictly comply with existing traffic laws and regulations while operating vehicles on roads and highways.
Under Section 11(1) of the Act, each driving licence is assigned 12 points. In addition to fines or imprisonment, points are deducted as an additional penalty when drivers violate traffic rules.
BRTA said the system is now being implemented automatically through the Road Safety Penalty System (RSPS) app, which records traffic violations and applies demerit points accordingly.
The authority directed all drivers across the country to follow traffic laws properly, stating that the initiative aims to reduce road accidents and improve overall road safety.
