Police have arrested two individuals in connection with attack on a couple with sharp weapons in the capital's Uttara area on Monday night.
The arrestees are Mobarak Hossain(25), and Robi Ray(22), the duty officer of Uttara West Police Station said.
A case was filed in this regard late last night, he said.
According to police, the incident began around 9:00 pm when a motorcycle, driving recklessly, hit an auto-rickshaw on Road-9, Sector-7 of Uttara.
The rickshaw driver protested the incident, and a couple riding another motorcycle also joined in. This led to an altercation, with the riders of the first motorcycle becoming aggressive and issuing threats. They then made a phone call, summoning several youths to the scene.
Shortly after, the youths arrived and attacked the couple with weapons -- an act that later went viral on social media.
Hearing hue and cry, local residents intervened, capturing two of the attackers, beating them, and handing them over to the police.
Earlier, Uttara West Police's Inspector of Investigation, AB Siddique, confirmed that two individuals had been detained in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, residents of Uttara reported that teenage gang members engage in mugging at various spots in the area every evening. They deliberately snatch mobile phones and wallets, threatening people with weapons.
