After Bangladesh’s exit from the Champions Trophy following a defeat to New Zealand, captain Najmul Hossain addressed the media, emphasizing the urgent need for batting improvements.
Despite a strong start with the bat, Bangladesh failed to capitalize, ultimately allowing New Zealand to take control of the match.
The recurring issue of batting collapses remains a major concern. When asked about Bangladesh’s consistent underperformance in ICC events, Shanto acknowledged the frustration.
“It’s very disappointing as a captain,” he said in the post-match press conference.
“If you look at our bowling unit over the last couple of years, we’ve done a great job. We have quality fast bowlers and spinners. But as a batting group, we need significant improvement.”
Bangladesh’s struggles with the bat have been a long-standing issue, and Najmul stressed the need for a change in mindset.
“We keep making the same mistakes repeatedly,” he admitted.
“We must seriously focus on improving our batting. I hope that after this tournament, we make the necessary changes and adopt a fresh approach.”
“We started very well. I think as a bowling unit we started very well, but on a wicket like this they batted really well,” Shanto admitted.
He praised his bowlers, stating, “I can’t expect more from the bowlers. I’m happy with the bowling unit and the way they bowled.”
Despite the disappointment, Shanto remained optimistic about Bangladesh’s final game against Pakistan on Thursday, even though both teams are now out of contention.
“We always play to win and give our 100%,” he stated.
“Representing our country is always a matter of pride. I hope the boys put on a special performance for the fans and for ourselves,” he concluded.
