Two-time SAFF champions, the Bangladesh national women’s football team, were awarded the country’s second-highest civilian honor, the Ekushey Padak 2025, by the Interim Government for their contributions to sports.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus presented the award at a ceremony at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on February 20. While team leaders, managers, assistant coaches, and other officials attended, head coach Peter Butler was notably absent, raising questions about his no-show.
Addressing the speculation, Butler clarified the situation at a press conference yesterday (February 23) at the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) premises ahead of the national team’s UAE tour.
“I can clear up the confusion perfectly. I never received an invite until 6:30 in the morning—maybe there was a misunderstanding. No problem,” he said.
“Secondly, I had a training session until nine o'clock. And thirdly, I was down with the flu and wasn’t feeling well. I have immense respect for the award and am very, very thankful. Well done to everyone involved, and thank you for voting,” he added.
The question was initially directed at BFF executive committee member and Women’s Football Committee Chairman Mahfuza Akhter Kiran, who was also present at the press conference. However, she redirected it to Butler, saying, “I think it's better to ask the coach. I wasn't in the country. Those who organized it can tell you why the coach didn't go.”
Certain protocols must be followed meticulously before attending a major national event. While the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) undoubtedly received instructions from the relevant government authorities, apparent miscommunication and negligence meant Butler only learned about his invitation just hours before the event.
