Former minister and veteran politician Tofail Ahmed has died on Monday afternoon (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un).
He breathed his last on Monday afternoon while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.
He was 82 years old at the time of his death. He had been receiving treatment at the hospital for a long time due to age-related complications.
The hospital authorities and his family confirmed the matter to the media.
The veteran politician had long been suffering from paralysis and other health issues. He was admitted to a hospital in the capital in a critical condition on September 28, where he was placed on life support.
On that day, rumours of his death spread on social media, but doctors later dismissed the claims and clarified the situation.
He is survived by his wife, Anwara Begum, and his only daughter, Dr. Taslima Ahmed Jaman Munni.
Tofail Ahmed was born on October 22, 1943, in Koralia village of South Digholdi union in Bhola Sadar upazila. He served as the Vice-President of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) from 1967 to 1969. He gained nationwide recognition for his key role in the 1969 mass uprising.
In the 1970 election, at the age of 27, he was elected as a member of the Pakistan National Assembly. He was elected to parliament nine times and served as a minister on multiple occasions. He was also a member of the advisory council of the now-banned Awami League.
