State Minister for Shipping Rajib Ahsan has said that making waterway travel a reliable mode of transportation is one of the government's key priorities.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after visiting the Chandpur launch terminal on Sunday afternoon.
The state minister said that waterways could once again become a trusted means of transport if launch terminal pontoons are modernised and river channels remain navigable through regular dredging.
"We want waterways to regain their lost glory and heritage," he said.
Regarding the century-old steamers, Rajib Ahsan said the vessels had undergone repeated repairs over the years. Although one steamer remains operational, the others are no longer suitable for passenger service.
"Passenger safety is our top priority. However, we are exploring alternative ways to utilise these historic steamers so that they can continue serving the public," he added.
He further said that the Shipping Ministry would continue working to ensure safe and reliable transportation for people across the country.
