Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has highlighted the important role of engineers in building a new Bangladesh and advancing the country’s overall development.
He expressed hope that engineers would play a vital role in the coming days.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a reception and closing ceremony marking the 78th founding anniversary of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) on Saturday.
The minister also strongly criticised corruption carried out under development projects during the previous government.
He said that during what he described as the “fascist regime,” around Tk 3,500 crore was embezzled in Pirojpur district alone through the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Ministry. He urged everyone to raise their voice against such misuse of public funds and corruption.
In his speech, Mirza Fakhrul also praised Sanjida Islam Tulee, coordinator of the platform “Mayer Daak,” formed to demand the rights of families of enforced disappearance victims.
He said that despite many obstacles, Tulee has continued her efforts and taken the suffering and demands for justice of affected families to the international level through the organisation.
