Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday inaugurated the re-excavation work of the nearly extinct Dharar Canal in Dariarpur under Trishal upazila in Mymensingh, a canal closely linked to the memory of his father, martyr President Ziaur Rahman.
The Prime Minister arrived in Trishal by road from Dhaka around 2:15 pm. After arrival, he first unveiled the plaque of the project amid stormy weather, and later formally launched the excavation work by cutting soil with a spade.
Tarique Rahman also planted a palm sapling beside the canal.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam, local lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman Liton and Mymensingh Zila Parishad Administrator Syed Emran Saleh Prince were present on the occasion.
The 3.1-kilometre Dharar canal was originally excavated on September 6, 1979, under the initiative of former President Ziaur Rahman. Over time, the canal gradually became nearly extinct.
As part of the government’s nationwide canal restoration programme, Tarique Rahman inaugurated the re-excavation work of the canal.
After inaugurating the re-excavation work and planting the tree, the Prime Minister addressed local residents from a stage set up next to the canal.
