Amid nationwide protests over the brutal killing of a child, Ramisa, following rape in the capital, a three-year-old girl was reportedly assaulted in Bakolia area of Chattogram on Tuesday, reports Daily Sun.
Sources said the incident took place at Bismillah Mansion in the Chaimanghata area under Bakolia Police Station in the afternoon.
On information, police rushed to the spot and detained the accused from the building.
However, angry locals cordoned off the residence, demanding that the accused be handed over to them.
At one stage, a large crowd gathered at the scene, preventing police from taking the suspect away.
Around 8:00pm, police charged batons and fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd, according to sources.
Bakolia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman said the child was sent to the One-Stop Crisis Centre of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.
He added that police were trying to bring the situation under control.
Tension prevailed in the area as protesters continued demonstrations, burning wood until the report was filed at 8:30pm.
