Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon was separately called on by UK High Commissioner in Dhaka Sarah Cooke and Swiss Ambassador Reto Rengli.
They met separately at the minister's office at the Secretariat on Thursday morning. State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury was present at the time.
During the meeting, UK High Commissioner Sarah Cooke sincerely congratulated Zahir Uddin Swapon on assuming the charge of the Information and Broadcasting Minister.
At the time, the Information Minister said, “The current government is determined to ensure media freedom. To this end, the government has started the work of forming a media commission. He sought the cooperation of the UK in this regard.”
The minister expressed his interest in utilizing the experience of the UK's media regulatory agency 'Office of Communications' (Ofcom).
He said, “Ofcom’s experience can play an important role in setting policy in the media sector in Bangladesh.”
The British High Commissioner assured all necessary cooperation in this regard. At the same time, he informed the minister about the overall activities of Ofcom.
On the other hand, Swiss Ambassador Reto Renglio also congratulated the Information Minister on assuming the new responsibility.
During the meeting, Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said that the government is determined to ensure media freedom. At the same time, the government is also giving importance to protecting the people from misinformation and disinformation.
