The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Ataullah abu Ammar Jununi, 48, the chief of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) from Siddhirganj in Narayanganj.
A team of RAB-11 captured Ataullah and five other members of the ARSA – a Rohingya insurgent group active in northern Rakhine State, Myanmar on Monday, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Prattus Kumar Majumder told the Daily Sun adding that Jununi is wanted in many cases.
Two cases were filed against them with the Sidhhirganj police station. They were produced before a Narayanganj court on Tuesday afternoon. The police officers concerned sought the court to grant 20-day remand in the two cases.
After hearing on the remand plea, Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate granted 10-day remand for each, said Kaium Khan, inspector of court police.
Other arrestees are Mostaq Ahmed, 66, Salimullah, 27, Mohammad Asmat Ullah, 24 and Hasan, 43, the residents of Myanmar, and Moniruzzaman, 24.
Mostaq, Salimullah, Asmat Ullah and Hasan used to live in a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar while Ataullah abu Ammar Jununi fled from Myanmar.
Moniruzzamn is a resident of Bhumipalli residential area in Siddhirganj.
The RAB seized Tk51.39 lakh, US dollar, ringgit and other foreign currencies from the arrestees.
Public Prosecutor of the court Khorshed Alam Molla said the accused were holding meeting secretly for carrying out sabotage in Narayanganj and Mymensingh. Being informed, the RAB members arrested them from a multi-store building at Bhumi Pallai residential area.
Early on Monday, the RAB held four others from Garden City building at Notun Bazar intersection in Mymensingh city.
They are Asmaul Hosna, 23, wife of Salimullah, Md Hasan, 15, Mst Shahina, 22 and Senoara, 17.
The ARSA became active on 9 October 2016. And since then, Ataullah abu Ammar Jununi has been leading the armed-group in the Rakhaine state.
ARSA Chief Jununi was born in Karachi in Pakistan. He was the mastermind of the killing of Rohingya leader Muhibullah.
Four accused arrested in the murder case said in their court statements that Ataullah was the one who ordered the murder of the Rohingya leader.
Ataullah is charge-sheeted in the murder case of DGFI officer (Squadron Leader) Rizwan Rushdi during a joint anti-drug operation at the Tumbru border in Naikhongchhari in Bandarban.
