A Bangladeshi businessman was shot dead by armed robbers in South Africa on Thursday night (Bangladesh time).
The incident took place around 9pm in Vepener, a town in South Africa’s Free State Province.
The victim was identified as Kamrul Islam, 33, son of the late Abdul Mannan Miah of Ozi Ullah Hafez Bari. He was a resident of Karmullahpur village in Yakubpur Union under Daganbhuiyan upazila in Feni district.
Kamruzzaman, Kamrul’s elder brother, confirmed the incident.
He said Kamrul moved to South Africa 12 years ago and initially worked a job before starting his own business. He had been planning to return to Bangladesh soon.
According to Kamruzzaman, two Black robbers stormed Kamrul’s shop as he was closing for the night. They looted cash and valuables from the store before forcing him outside, believing he had more money in his car.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants then shot him in the left side of his chest, killing him on the spot.
Kamruzzaman added that they are in touch with relatives in South Africa and are making arrangements to bring Kamrul’s body home. He also sought the government’s cooperation.
Daganbhuiyan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Azharul Islam said he was aware of the incident and that efforts were underway to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the matter.
