Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment has announced that maternity leave for female workers is being extended to 120 days.
He made this statement while delivering a speech as the chief guest at an informal discussion and Iftar event with officials from various embassies on labour issues, held on Wednesday at the Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in the capital.
The adviser emphasized that the interim government is firmly committed to establishing a labour system aligned with international labour standards while ensuring the welfare and dignity of Bangladeshi workers.
He stated that the government formed a Labour Rights Reform Commission, led by a labour rights activist, to review sector issues and submit recommendations by March to uphold workers' rights and social justice.
The government has collaborated with trade unions, employers, and the International Labour Organization (ILO) to amend labour laws in response to rising demands and international conventions.
Ahead of the 353rd session of the International Labour Organization (ILO), scheduled in Geneva, Switzerland, from March 10 to 20, senior officials from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, including the Secretary, participated in an informal discussion on labour issues with embassy representatives.
