Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the timeline for the next national election depends on the reform agenda, which he called the 'July Charter'.
“The election date will depend on the July Charter,” he told reporters outside the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka moments before the National Consensus Commission's first meeting.
He said, “Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has already indicated that the election could be held by December. If that happens, we may implement some of the recommendations, while the political government will carry out the rest.”
Explaining the July Charter, Shafiqul Alam said it would be a consensus document signed by all political parties after thorough discussions on the reports of six reform commissions.
“We hope all political parties will sign the July Charter,” he added.
Shafiqul Alam noted that many of the reform commissions’ recommendations could be implemented without political discussions, but key reforms requiring consensus would be addressed through dialogue.
