Interpol has been requested to issue a red alert notice to arrest former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zakir Hossain Galib's court issued the arrest warrant in response to an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday.
ACC deputy director Hafizul Islam filed the application. The application stated that Benazir Ahmed is absconding abroad. He needs to be arrested and brought to justice. Therefore, an arrest warrant needs to be issued against him via Interpol. After the hearing, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.
The ACC filed four cases against former IGP Benazir Ahmed and his wife and children on December 15 last year. The charges in the case are that Benazir acquired undeclared assets worth Tk 94.4 million and concealed information about assets worth Tk 26.2 million. His wife Zeeshan Mirza has acquired undeclared assets worth Tk 316.9 million and concealed information worth Tk 161.1 million. Their eldest daughter Farheen Rishta binte Benazir has acquired illegal assets worth Tk 87.5 million and their middle daughter Tahsin Raisa binte Benazir has acquired illegal assets worth Tk 55.9 million.
Meanwhile, on February 9, the Bangladesh Retired Police Officers Welfare Association issued a statement demanding that Benazir Ahmed be brought back to the country through Interpol and face justice.
