The Election Commission (EC) has found evidence of National ID (NID) data leaks involving five organizations. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed provided this information.
He said, "Five organizations that provide NID services have leaked information to third parties. Initial investigations have found evidence of this."
The EC Secretary shared this information with the media after a meeting with the organizations that offer NID verification services, held at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon on Monday.
The organizations found to have leaked data include the Health Directorate, UCB Bank, Chittagong Port Authority, the Department of Women Affairs, and the Ministry of Finance’s IBAS.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed stated that these organizations have been issued show-cause notices. An investigation is underway to determine whether the leaks were due to negligence or intentional actions. If anyone has done this deliberately, it will be considered a punishable offense.
He added that 182 organizations receive NID verification services from the NID division. There should be a limit on the use of data. We cannot blame thieves while leaving everything open. Everyone must remain vigilant.
He further stated that 182 organizations verify NID data through the Election Commission. Some organizations are obtaining services from other institutions, violating the terms of the agreement. A review will be conducted to assess how much data each organization needs and whether they are receiving more than necessary.
The Election Commission is conducting a three-day discussion with 182 organizations that use SID data verification services.
