Agitating students and people entered Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital and demolished the building on Wednesday night.
The protesters reached Dhanmondi 32, also known as the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, with a ‘Bulldozer Procession,’ chanting various slogans against the ousted Awami League around 8:00 pm.
At one stage, they began ransacking and setting fire to the Bhaban, venting their anger toward exiled Sheikh Hasina, who was scheduled to address the banned student outfit Chhatra League virtually from India around 9:00 pm.
Protesters chanted various slogans such as “Fashi Fashi Fashi Chai, Sheikh Hasinar Fashi Chai, Sara Banglae Khobor De, Mujibbader Kobor De, Awami League-er Pretatta, Bangladeshe Thakbe Na, and Inquilab Zindabad.”
According to the witnesses, army personnel went to the spot around 9:30 pm, and took position on the main street. Later, they left the area.
On the other hand, protesters also set fire to Sudha Sadan, the Dhanmondi residence of Hasina's late husband and nuclear scientist MA Wazed Miah, around 11:00 pm.
In the face of a student-led mass uprising, Awami League president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to step down from power and subsequently fled the country on August 5 last year.
Staying in the neighbouring country, she is engaged in hatching plots to make Bangladesh a dysfunctional country by involving the international communities and the Indian influence.
She has been making anti-state remarks over minority issues and attempting to regain her regime by dishing out falsehoods in the global arena.
As part of her plan, Awami League announced a month-long demonstration, including leaflet distribution, protest rallies and processions, blockades and general strike throughout February demanding the resignation of Prof Muhammad Yunus, chief of the interim government.
