If the services cannot be improved, a proposal has been made to dissolve Biman Bangladesh Airlines and form a new airline.
This proposal has been made by the government-formed Task Force on Economic Strategy Redefinition and Necessary Resource Acquisition for Non-Discriminatory Sustainable Development.
According to the proposal, the new airline can be named “Bangladesh Airways”. The proposed airline company can be operated independently by a world-class management company using half of Biman's assets.
Even if the new airline is formed, Biman will not be dissolved. The two airlines can operate competitively in parallel. If either of the two airlines fails to provide the expected services, it can be closed.
Planning and Education Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud spoke about the recommendation to form a new airline at a press conference organized on Monday on the recommendations of the task force committee.
He said: “The people of Bangladesh deserve to receive advanced and modern air transport services. But Bangladesh Biman has completely failed to provide such services. Foreign businessmen are coming to our country and earning profits. But Bangladesh Biman is unable to do anything.”
“The general public is being deprived of passenger services. To change this situation, it is the demand of the hour to create a new airline from scratch. According to the plan, Bangladesh Biman will be dissolved and an airline will be created with a new name and a completely new model,” he added.
The adviser said: “It is possible to implement this plan by using half the assets. This is what the Economic Strategy Redefinition Task Force Committee thinks. World-class independent management activities can be conducted so that all kinds of modern facilities are maintained.”
