BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has opined that several dams in India caused to drying up the rivers, canals and rills of Bangladesh.
He said, “Our main rivers have dried up due to the construction of various dams in India. As a result, problems have arisen in cultivation. The dam that India is building is a violation of international law. It must be presented in the international arena. The issue was raised at the United Nations during our previous government's tenure.”
He said this while virtually connecting to a day-long workshop of Magura district BNP and its affiliates at the auditorium of Nomani Maidan in Magura on Thursday afternoon.
Tarique Rahman said, “The canal excavation program was implemented during the Shaheed Zia government. However those cannals have been filled up now. At the same time, the small rivers of the country have been filled. You know how the river and canal excavation was done during the previous failed government. We have to improve this situation. We have to excavate canals again and provide additional water that will be useful in the dry season.”
“During the previous government's tenure, Indian artists were brought to various events and local artists were ignored. Now we see artists being brought from Islamabad, Pakistan. That is why on December 16, we held a program with local artists under the title 'Bangladesh First'. We must continue this and resist foreign aggression in our culture,” he added.
