Sarjis Alam has resigned from the post of general secretary of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation.
He also declared an overhaul of the foundation's structure to enhance its operational capabilities.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Sarjis, also a key leader of the July-August 2024 mass uprising, claimed he stopped working for the foundation at the end of last year and officially handed over duties on January 7.
He also clarified the organogram of the foundation has been updated. The executive committee will perform all tasks from now on, while the governing body will formulate policies.
He announced the elimination of the general secretary position from the foundation.
The current CEO is Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, brother of uprising martyr Mir Mugdho, while the governing body comprises Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and four other interim government advisers.
Until December 31, the foundation had provided donations to families of 628 of the total 826 martyrs, and to 2,000 of the total 11,000 injured in the uprising.
In his Facebook post, Sarjis highlighted his decision to step down as “an act of bravery”, rather than a show of “weakness”. The student protest leader asserted that it takes honesty and courage to acknowledge one’s limitations and make difficult decisions.
