Dhaka hopes that border issues between Bangladesh and India will be solve through discussion following Land Boundary Agreement.
A foreign ministry notification issued on Monday informed media, saying: “Bangladesh firmly believes that any issues should be resolved through constructive dialogue under the existing bilateral agreement framework to maintain peace on the border.”
The ministry stated that it has sought detailed reports from the relevant ministries and agencies regarding the recent incidents on the Bangladesh-India border in Chapainawabganj.
According to media reports, “Three Bangladeshis were injured in a clash with Indian nationals near the zero line at the Chauka border in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Saturday. Tension is reported to be prevailing in the area following the incident.
Earlier, on 7th January, when Indian Border Security Force (BSF) began fencing along the zero line of the Chowk border, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) blocked it, creating tension between the two sides.
Meanwhile, home adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been allowed to use sound grenades and tear gas shells. For this, the government has decided to procure sound grenades and tear gas.
The adviser said: “Recently, it was seen at the Chapainawabganj border that the BSF used tear gas and sound grenades, but BGB does not have these. The BGB only have lethal weapons.”
“In such a reality, it has been decided to procure tear gas and sound grenades for the BGB. They will use them according to the situation,” the adviser continued.
He also said that the border is now stable, there are no major problems there.
