Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman said that there are no legal restrictions preventing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from participating in the upcoming parliamentary election, as all cases filed against them have been resolved.
He made this remark during a programme on a shadow parliament organised by Debate for Democracy in Dhaka on Friday.
However, Awami League President and ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will not be able to participate in the election if she is convicted, he said.
“All cases lodged against Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman have already been resolved. Therefore, there are no legal barriers for them to take part in the upcoming general election,” said the attorney general.
Those involved in election-related crimes must be prosecuted under the provisions of the previous Representation of the People Order (RPO), he said.
Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque will be brought under justice for the annulment of the caretaker government system, he added.
