Bangladesh has officially recognized the right to 24/7 internet access as a right for its citizens.
Information and Broadcasting Advisor Md. Nahid Islam made the announcement on his verified social media page on Tuesday evening. He stated, "The Cyber Protection Ordinance, 2024, establishes 24/7 internet access as a citizen's right. Section 2(Bha) of the ordinance includes provisions for cyber security."
ICT Policy Advisor Faiz Tayeb Ahmed also shared his views on social media, noting, "Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to recognize continuous internet access as a citizen's right. This right is enshrined in Section 2(Bha) of the Cyber Protection Ordinance, 2024."
Previously, the Information and Broadcasting Advisor urged internet service providers to offer unlimited internet packages to accommodate the public’s increasing demand.
In a press conference on Tuesday afternoon (December 24) at the Foreign Service Academy, Chief Adviser Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced that the draft of the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2024, had been approved.
