Zainul Abdin Farooq, Advisor to BNP Chairperson and former Chief Whip of the Awami League, criticized Sheikh Hasina's continued influence despite her departure from power. Farooq claimed that although Hasina is no longer in office, she is still "conspiring with her ghosts." He further commented on the Awami League's planned procession, lamenting that despite efforts, the party cannot unite the people while operating from abroad. Farooq emphasized that the people of Bangladesh are no longer swayed by "fake voices" and are becoming increasingly resistant to such tactics.
Farooq made these remarks during a protest rally held in front of the National Press Club on Sunday. The demonstration called for the immediate withdrawal of all false charges filed against Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarek Rahman.
He reflected on the nation's struggle for independence, stating, "We fought for the country's freedom in 1971 because we refused to be exploited. We wanted a democratic Bangladesh, where people could live freely and speak openly about democracy." He lamented, however, that the spirit of independence had been undermined by ongoing conspiracies since the country's birth. Farooq raised a critical question, asking whether those who came to power, shaped the security forces, dismantled the constitution, and formed political groups, truly had the independence of Bangladesh in mind.
Farooq also questioned the whereabouts of those who had ruled the country for 16 years with grand promises. He accused the Awami League of undermining constitutional institutions by dismantling the constitution itself. According to Farooq, Sheikh Hasina has transformed these institutions into mere extensions of her party, turning them into platforms for political patronage.
During his speech, He called on the interim government to engage in talks with political parties and provide a clear roadmap for the future. He emphasized that their primary demand from the interim government is the organization of free and fair elections. Farooq urged that any delays under the pretext of constitutional reforms should be avoided, stressing the need for timely electoral processes.
The meeting was chaired by SM Shahadat Hossain, Chairman of the Jatiyatabadi Gontantrik Party. BNP's Self-Reliance Affairs Secretary, Mir Sarfat Ali Sapu, along with the organization's Organizing Secretary, Mir Amir Hossain Amus, and several other leaders, were also in attendance.
