Onion prices have surged again despite normal imports from India at the Hili land port in Dinajpur, rising by Tk10-12 per kilogram in just three days, reports Dhaka Tribune.
This increase is attributed to decreased local supply and heightened demand for imported onions.
Wholesalers and consumers have expressed frustration over the sudden price hike, affecting their ability to purchase onions at affordable rates.
Importers explain that prices are temporarily impacted by Diwali market closures in India, and they anticipate stabilization within a week.
On Saturday, 991 tons of onions—Indore, Nashik, South, and Nagar varieties—arrived from India in 34 trucks.
Among these, Nashik onions sold at Tk100 per kg at the port, which was Tk90-95 three days ago.
The South and Nagar varieties sold for Tk98-100, while the Indore variety sold at Tk95 per kg, up from Tk85 three days ago.
Meanwhile, locally produced onions are selling at Tk130 per kg in the market.
According to Hili Customs, nearly 10,000 tons of onions have been imported through the port over 16 working days as of Saturday.
