A case has been filed against 52 named individuals, including Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, former president of the recently banned Chhatra League, along with 220 unidentified others, for an attack on a student anti-discrimination rally, theft of mobile phones, and vandalism.
The case was filed at Bhurungamari Police Station on October 23 by Abdul Quddus, the father of injured student Riad. Abdul Quddus is a resident of Uttar Tilai village and an active member of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The accused include recently banned Central Chhatra League’s former president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, his father Nurunnabi Chowdhury, the general secretary of the upazila Awami League and former upazila chairman, and Shahjahan Siraj, president of the upazila Awami League. Other members of the Awami-affiliated organizations were also accused.
The complaint states that on August 4, the accused attacked the anti-discrimination student rally twice, injuring several students, including Riad, and stole five mobile phones and vandalized the rally's microphone.
Anwar Hossain, the upazila Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, said Abdul Quddus filed the case as a parent after his son was injured. The party’s course of action will be determined based on decisions from senior authorities.
Earlier, on October 24, four Awami League leaders and activists were detained in connection with the case and sent to court. This incident has spread fear of arrest among Awami League leaders and activists.
